SARAH BELIKAN | PHOTOGRAPHY

Sarah Belikan was born in a small village in south-west Germany in the early 1990s. She came out as gay during her teenage years.

At that time, she began to express herself through her passion for art, playing in rock bands, writing stories and acting in the theater.

Her curiosity for creative (self-)discovery didn’t stop, so she began to follow her grandmother's path, when she inherited her analogue cameras. Finally pursuing her dream of living amongst other nonconformists at the age of 19, she moved to Berlin, where she still lives and works.

As a female photographer, feminist and queer woman, Sarah Belikan is determined to celebrate femininity and queerness.

She wants to teach witnessing eyes to perceive women’s bodies from a non-patriarchal view and eliminate the male gaze, which is often applied in depictions of women in arts and media.

Poem: “Schizophrenia”

“Schizophrenia - better than silence” is a poem by Dr. Isioma Nwokolo, based on the experiences she has heard from a number of her past Schizophrenic clients.

The poem calls to light the struggle of those who live with the condition and the loneliness that can come to the forefront when their medication stops the voices they have come to be used to and, in essence, destroys the reality they know to be true. At times like these, it is incredibly important for family, friends and the community around the individual with Schizophrenia to support them even more.

Fighting Repetitive Negative Thinking (RNT) with Words of Affirmation in Four Easy Steps

A lot of people, regardless of whether you have a recognised mental health difficulty, can suffer from Repetitive Negative Thoughts (RNT). The question is, how do we stop it? How do we break the habit?

RNT can look like a lot of things. Most of us would call it ruminating or worrying. It is often related to the past or the future, an event or issue that is creating stress, and you begin to think about ways to fix the problem. So far so good, except these thoughts begin to pile up in a way that is not helpful or constructive. You become trapped in a paralyzing cycle that damages your self-esteem, and mental health.

Negativity literally damages the body and the brain. RNT creates an environment of constant stress, and when stress is prolonged, it is known to exhaust the immune system, cause problems like IBS, heart problems, digestive problems, and can even put cells under duress…

Setting Boundaries

Setting boundaries is a vital part of relationships.

When boundaries are not set, it is easy for a person to be taken advantage of, whether that is in regards to comfort, emotions, or time. Not setting boundaries in relationships can lead to an unstable foundation being built, which can come up painfully later on.
