National Croissant Day

The croissant! An incredible pastry, delicate, flaky and as buttery as they come — this particular pastry is always associated with the French, but did you know it was first noted in Austria? As a celebration after they avoided invasion from the Turks in the mid-1600s, Austrian bakers baked their bread in the shape of a crescent moon, representing the Ottoman empire. It was apparently over a hundred years later, when this was seen by Marie Antoinette, that it was dubbed the “croissant”, and made with puff pastry.
